The LowCountry Institute works to help the next generation of community leaders to be environmentally informed. We offer education programs for schools and adults. The Hands-On Nature program was developed for grades K-2. The program allows small groups to participate in activities about animal classification, identification, and adaptation. Students also practice observation and reasoning skills in a nature walk around Mobley Nature Center.
The Biodiversity in Action program was designed for 5th grade students and reinforces the SC Curriculum Standards for Inquiry and Life Science. The program is taught here on the island on our nature trail system and focuses on local ecosystems.
Master Naturalist is an approximately three month long class that helps participants broaden their knowledge of local ecology and resource management, and provides insight into the associated challenges that arise. It is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with our coastal area.
The LowCountry Institute also welcomes other groups to visit Spring Island. Among groups that have visited in the past are birding and garden clubs. As part of our outreach program, we can also send out a naturalist to your location.
